In 1987, international pioneers in maternal health convened in Nairobi, Kenya with a commitment to improve maternal health worldwide. Out of this conference three decades ago, the Safe Motherhood Initiative was born. The initiative’s mission to reduce maternal mortality globally and ensure safe and acceptable birthing conditions for mothers all around the world continues today.
Please join the Wilson Center, the United Nations Population Fund, and the Maternal Health Task Force on 8 December to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Safe Motherhood Initiative, a revolutionary movement which named maternal health a global health priority.
